Featuring Leonor Gill, Entrepreneur and Financial Educator

The Paradigm for Parity® coalition honors Hispanic Heritage month with the release of another Very Courageous Conversation. The video highlights the unique obstacles Latina women face in the workplace and the impact on their mental health. Produced in partnership with Stacey Tisdale and Mind Money Media, Inc., the video features Leonor Gill, Entrepreneur and Financial Educator, Patricia Mota, President and CEO of the Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement, and Dr. Jim Rodriguez, psychologist and adjunct professor at the New York University Silver School of Social Work.

Bias

Leonor Gill recalls the biases she faced as she sought to advance in the corporate world as a Mexican woman, saying “a lot of people think that you’re not capable of doing it because you’re a typical Mexican wife who should just go home and feed your kids and cook a meal or something. But I stay[ed] the course. I remained focused.”

Mental Health Support

Dr. Jim Rodriguez explains that companies looking to support their Latinx employees must “ensure that mental health services are part of the packages that corporations offer… the second part that’s critically important is messaging and creating a culture of self-care and a culture that values mental health.”

Recognition by the Business Community

Patricia Mota notes that companies “need to have Latinas [to] help drive your business — to give you information on what this consumer looks like and the market.” She goes on to explain that the Latinx community will “walk out the door” if they don’t see corporations giving back to their communities or representing them in the workforce. She also highlights the one point seven trillion dollar purchasing power that the Latinx community represents overall, with Latinx people having a GDP of two point seven trillion dollars

The Paradigm for Parity® coalition’s CEO, Sandra Quince, said about the coalition’s approach to leveling the playing field for Latinas. “We are purposeful in making sure all women remain part of the conversation. I also want to acknowledge national Hispanic American Heritage Month as we honor the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latinx Americans.”
